The automotive industry is undergoing an unprecedented technological transformation, with smart vehicles emerging as connected mobile devices that drive advancements in safety, efficiency, and user experience. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of application development within the Android Automotive ecosystem—a key platform in the evolution of connected vehicles. Using a systematic literature review based on PRISMA 2020 guidelines, 91 relevant studies were identified addressing technical, safety, and usability aspects in this environment. Findings show that Android Automotive, with its modular architecture and compatibility with Google and third-party services, enables manufacturers to tailor experiences to driver needs. Applications developed for this platform prioritize intuitive, distraction-minimizing interfaces and optimize human-machine interaction through artificial intelligence and voice recognition. However, cybersecurity and data protection remain critical challenges, which are mitigated through regular system updates. The growing adoption of this platform—integrated into more than 50 vehicle models since 2021—demonstrates its market consolidation. Moreover, Android Automotive's potential is highlighted by its role in autonomous driving systems and integration with emerging Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. This study offers key guidance for developers, manufacturers, and regulators on the safe and efficient implementation of applications for connected vehicles, underscoring Android Automotive's central role in reshaping the smart automotive ecosystem.
